✨ What`s New Wednesday! ✨
Conserving Carolina has been hard at work on property and you will notice some changes on your next visit (for the better!). One big project is the riverbank stabilization in three areas on our property along the French Broad River.
The riverbank stabilization near the front of the property between Otter and River Cabins has been completed. Large boulders have been placed along the shore, wrapped in a biodegradable mesh along with plantings that will grow and take root along the banks of the river. The dock that was previously here had to be taken down since it was falling into the river and became unsafe. But don`t worry, a new dock is in the works!
Walk along the River Trail behind River Cabin and you`ll find another area Conserving Carolina worked on. This area next to the meadow was determined to be a low spot that floods first when the river rises. They`ve also worked on a way to guide flood waters away from the cabins and into the ditches that Bill Mayes dug.
Then, by the bamboo forest in the back of the property, they dug back the riverbank and buried trees to reinforce it instead of bringing in boulders. They used bamboo (from their removal project) and dying trees on property for this section.
All of this work will help prevent the land from eroding and falling into the river. The stones, buried trees, and roots from the newly planted trees will give structure to areas that were just dirt before. It`s incredible to see how they work with nature to protect and preserve the land.
Let us know if you`re interested in hearing more about Conserving Carolina`s projects on property!

Last Tuesday we hosted @thefamilyplacenc’s Spring Luncheon!
Speakers stepped up on the stage and shared stories and accomplishments from TFP board members (including Dionne, Deerwoode’s own!), testimonials from a family, and an engaging key note from Adam Christing. We’re happy to support and be the gathering spot for The Family Place’s luncheon. They provide free resources, support, and a place to play and connect for families in the community.
Learn more about TFP and ways to get involved by visiting their profile & website.

“Deerwoode never disappoints. This was our 3rd time staying there. It is so close to all the great things Brevard has to offer but when you`re on the property you feel 1000 miles away. Love it. Cant wait to go back.” ~ Brandon M. April 2026
We`re so glad you`ve come back again and again to experience the magic of Deerwoode!

We are in a drought... but wedding season is about to start.
Here’s how we filled our swimming hole and ponds without rainwater.
Normally, spring showers will return nature to a vibrant green and ponds and lakes will be full of sparkling water. That didn’t happen this year.
We’ve been in a drought since fall of last year and are really starting to see the effects with streams and lakes noticably lower than usual. Western North Carolina is currently in an Extreme Drought, the second highest rating, with a burn ban in effect since the end of March.
So, the challenge: how are we going to fill our dry swimming hole and low ponds to make the property beautiful before the spring and summer weddings.
We hooked up a pipe to the well and have been pumping water uphill into the Swimming Hole. Water from the Swimming Hole flows into the ponds in front of Coyote Lodge with overflow going into the pond in front of Wolf & Bear Cabins. That pond was recently empty and lots of work was done to remove the lily pads that covered it.
These ponds are currently being filled and after weeks of work they are close to being picturesque again! We appreciate our guests who stayed with us during the not so pretty phases, and are happy to provide beautiful scenery to our upcoming weddings and families staying with us!
