"Highly Recommend Staying Here!"

by Alicia

01/13/2023

A wonderful getaway! This cabin and the surrounding Reserve are so perfect for a family, we really enjoyed our stay and would love to plan a trip back. The cabin layout worked well for us, with all three bedrooms downstairs and a spacious living area upstairs. The beds were very comfortable, the water was hot, everything was immaculately clean, the kitchen was full of all the essentials. Communication with the hosts was simple and straightforward. They thought of it all! The Reserve is beautiful, with so much to explore right out your front door. There are several National Parks within 30 min - it's just such a good location to get out onto the trails and see the countless waterfalls in the area. The cabin is also very close to town so it's easy to get groceries, coffee, etc as needed. Highly recommend staying here!

We had an absolutely wonderful time! We loved the cabin and its location. The hammocks, bamboo forest and all of the trails right around the cabin were perfect. We saw 3 bears next to our cabin on our last night. It was a magical week. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. We loved the coffee bar as well. Thank you!

"Perfect for Two Couples, a Kid, and Some Dogs!"

We loved our week long stay at the little log cabin. It was perfect for two couples, a kid, and a couple of dogs. We spent a lot of time on the spacious porch and deck overlooking the ponds, and the trails were great for morning and afternoon walks. There is a good bit to do on the property itself, and it is in a great location with town and Dupont Forest being close by. Everything about the cabin was as advertised, and the owners were friendly and accommodating.

Recommend staying at this beautiful Reserve. Your definitely missing out if you pass this up ! Owners have thought of everything on this 125 acre reserve. 5 minutes from downtown Brevard. They have a cabin for everyone, groups small or large.
Great place to bring your dogs, next time we will. Check out their Bamboo Forest and take a spin on the kayak or canoe on the lake.
Great Stay !! 10 Stars

"Already Making Plans to Come Back"

by Stacey

We had a fantastic time at the Deerwoode Reserve! Our family used the kayaks on the lake, and our boys took a quick dip in the swimming hole. The bamboo forest was unique and fun to walk through. The cabin was lovely and better than we expected. The Reserve was so peaceful, and we enjoyed beginning each day with coffee on the deck overlooking the lake. The owners were extremely friendly and welcoming. We are already making plans to come back in the fall!

JUDGE JAMES A. FORSYTHE JR FAMILY:

Judge Forsythe was born 11/26/1853. He was married to Julia Nathalie, who was born 5/14/1860, and they married 5/14/1877. They moved into the house and added a wing to it. They had one son and two daughters. James A. Forsythe Jr. (1882 – 1957), Margaret Elizabeth ( 4/21/1885 – 9/16/1886) and Ellen Harllee Forsythe Vermilye (11/4/1888 – 1/24/1936). Julia died 5/14/1923 and Judge Forsythe died in 1925. They are all buried in the Gillispie Cemetery in Brevard. Elizabeth was originally buried on the property but because of the grave being washed by rains, was later transferred to Gillispie Cemetery. There are stories and accounts of baby ghost Elizabeth haunting the Big Log Cabin, which was built on the site of the original homestead.

THE MAYES (Cont.)

In 1969, the Mayes moved into the Otter Cabin, originally built in 1940. It was formerly the camp infirmary and was also known as the Gate House. Bill built the deck and closed in the screen porch where the large brick cooking fireplace is located. During the time they lived there, they tore down the old original homesite that had fallen into such disrepair and decided to build a new log home on the same basement foundation, now called the Big Log Cabin.

ROBERT J. HUSSEY / CAMP DEERWOODE FOR GIRLS:

When Mr. Hussey purchased the property in 1935, the camp was transformed from a boys camp into a camp for girls. It was operated by Mr. and Mrs. George Mason Swift. Mrs. Swift had previously operated a camp, called Camp Dellwood, and in an effort to continue to use the same camp songs, they re-named it to Camp Deerwoode. At this time camp property was comprised of 250 acres featuring horseback riding, including all day and overnight horseback trips. The girls played polo, learned archery and riflery, and had classes in swimming and canoeing, as well as tennis and golf. Other elective courses offered at camp were dancing, dramatics, musical comedy, and musical instruments and nightly shows were performed in The Big Room. The craft building was a popular place and described as the heart of the camp, featuring eight large floor looms with flying shuttles. Other craft projects consisted of silver craft, pottery and leather craft. The camp season ran from July 1 – August 26 and cost $300.
