There is also a front porch with plenty of seating. The Mayes family could not have been more accommodating ~ they are multi-talented, love their resort and pride of ownership is apparent.

Matt greeted all and made us all feel so welcome – in addition he made fires for us in the huge fireplace downstairs in the lodge.

Deerwoode is such a serene rustic beautiful resort on 175 acres. The resort is a true gem in the North Carolina mountains. All in our group were very happy with our accommodations and we would definitely stay here again – equal to the lodging is the professional, warm outstanding service. What a terrific place for our small group of good friends to reunite!

Room Tip: If your group includes eight people, the Coyote Lodge can be taken for your group only.

Lodge Rental Review at Deerwoode

My wife and I recently stayed the weekend in Deerwoode and I loved it so much I felt like I had to tear myself away when we left. We got a room in the lodge – “The Deer Room” – which like the rest of the buildings are adorned with original paintings of the owner’s wife. Our room was very rustic with heart pine floors, panels, and ceilings, clean as a whistle, and well appointed with the necessities, but by no means the luxuries.

You wake up in the morning to the sounds of nature in the cool crisp morning air and you can hike, fish, canoe, and generally relax like no place else in a sumptous 175 acre wildlife preserve.

The lakes are teaming with fish almost like fishing in a barrel, and my wife and I hiked around the entire property which borders a long stretch of the French Broad River and included a dense bamboo forest as well as ascending to the summit of Sugerloaf Mountain. Trust me, we had no trouble sleeping that night!

I should also mention that amazingly you can be right downtown in Brevard, NC, a charming and quaint mountain town in five minutes from Deerwoode. We had a lot of fun with the local shopping and locally owned restaurants. I have to mention that at age 56 I have eaten many hamburgers in my time, but the New Orleans Burger at Jordan St Cafe beat them all. It was a purely delightful slobberfest which I had to mash down with my hand in order to be able to fit part of it in my mouth. I had to “assume the position” as instructed by Guy Fieri with both hands on the burger by necessity and with elbows out and pointed up to keep the juice from running down my arms. For total decompression combined with shopping and dining in a peaceful friendly village, you can’t beat Deerwoode.

Found this place at the last minute and we couldn’t be happier! Beautiful property with several different lodging options. We stayed in the smallest cabin, right on the river and it was perfect for us.

We met some of the friendliest farm animals ever and took a stroll through a bamboo forest! The owner was fantastic and we will definitely come back and stay again in one of the larger cabins and bring our kids with us!

Bear Cabin Rental Review Deerwoode Reserve

This place was outstanding! The Bear cabin I stayed in was perfect for two people. Cozy, and had everything you need for a weekend away. The room was very clean and well kept. The grounds are an adventure themselves. There are trails all over the property in the forest and by the river. it is plenty to keep you busy. The ponds and river make for amazing pictures.

Also it is not more than 5 minutes away from downtown Brevard, so if you are looking to go out at night for a bite to eat, it is very simple. 30 minutes from Asheville and Pisgah Forest so It made for an awesome base for weekend activities. Will be going back!

I have stayed in a couple of different cabins and in the lodge and they all offered a positive experience. I loved walking around the property and seeing the French Broad River, shooting hoops in the barn gym and playing competitive games of table tennis with Bill Mayes and his buddies. The location is perfect as you are under 10 minutes to town and if you like to walk it is an easy walk.

The only place I will ever stay when I come back to Brevard to visit is at Deerwood Lodge. I grew up near there and want to go back more to visit so I can stay at the lodge as you feel like you are close to nature. It is so peaceful and you get to feed the goats and pet the donkey. Thanks for the hospitality! I went with my husband but would feel very comfortable if I stayed there solo. There are so many active things you can do while in Brevard as well and Matt will be more than happy to give you guidance and help coordinate. We kayaked, hiked at Dupont State Forest and swam in the water hole at Davidson River Campground. If you want to enjoy God’s Country go to Brevard and stay at Deerwood Lodge.

Review for Deerwoode Reserve Vacation rentals

River Cabin Rental Review Brevard NC

I knew from the moment that my eyes rested on the River Cabin nestled among the trees and overlooking the meandering French Broad River that Paradise was Found!

My Five Star rating is not so much for what Deerwoode IS but what it will DO for your spirit!

What we have here is 175 acres of lovingly cared for grounds with a dose of eco-friendlyness and conservation thrown in for good measure. Sure, there are flaws in the fabric of Deerwoode but they are like the scars found in fine leather that signal that you have the real thing and not something fake.

We ate lunch and breakfast on a small table under a massive copse of trees right smack dab next to the river flowing not 25 feet from our cabin. Our cabin was CLEAN, comfortable and decorated with just the right amount of artwork mixed with old quilts. You may not find every convenience; You will find every necessity; You will find a little of your true self as you get to scrape away the veneer that has built up around and might be choking your spirit! And it goes on and on and on.

The hospitality of the staff, majestic scenery, and accommodations made Deerwoode the perfect choice for our small group retreat . The Coyote Lodge is perfect for group gatherings while the campfire circle provides a different atmosphere for socializing. The lakes and nature trails also provide for fun activities such as biking, hiking, fishing and canoeing.

River Cabin Vacation Rental Review

We love Deerwoode! This was our second stay and it could not have been better. We were running late on the first night of the stay because my husband’s plane was delayed coming back from a business trip. Matt took care of us, told us not to worry and had the heat going for us when we got there.

The Riverside cabin is great! Love, Love, Love the gas fireplace and full kitchen. We have also stayed in the Bear cabin and it is cozy as well. We always feel relaxed after staying here and love to walk the grounds and trails with all the birds and other animals. Also love to just curl up on the couch in front of the fireplace and read.

-Windy H.

What a wonderful place. So peaceful! By French Broad River, many flat trails to walk around, small ponds to fish and release. I caught a couple of small mouth bass. I enjoyed hearing the bull frogs The cabins are cozy. We were in the Lone Wolf cabin. We checked out another cabin and the lodge – very nice.

JUDGE JAMES A. FORSYTHE JR FAMILY:

Judge Forsythe was born 11/26/1853. He was married to Julia Nathalie, who was born 5/14/1860, and they married 5/14/1877. They moved into the house and added a wing to it. They had one son and two daughters. James A. Forsythe Jr. (1882 – 1957), Margaret Elizabeth ( 4/21/1885 – 9/16/1886) and Ellen Harllee Forsythe Vermilye (11/4/1888 – 1/24/1936). Julia died 5/14/1923 and Judge Forsythe died in 1925. They are all buried in the Gillispie Cemetery in Brevard. Elizabeth was originally buried on the property but because of the grave being washed by rains, was later transferred to Gillispie Cemetery. There are stories and accounts of baby ghost Elizabeth haunting the Big Log Cabin, which was built on the site of the original homestead.

THE MAYES (Cont.)

In 1969, the Mayes moved into the Otter Cabin, originally built in 1940. It was formerly the camp infirmary and was also known as the Gate House. Bill built the deck and closed in the screen porch where the large brick cooking fireplace is located. During the time they lived there, they tore down the old original homesite that had fallen into such disrepair and decided to build a new log home on the same basement foundation, now called the Big Log Cabin.

ROBERT J. HUSSEY / CAMP DEERWOODE FOR GIRLS:

When Mr. Hussey purchased the property in 1935, the camp was transformed from a boys camp into a camp for girls. It was operated by Mr. and Mrs. George Mason Swift. Mrs. Swift had previously operated a camp, called Camp Dellwood, and in an effort to continue to use the same camp songs, they re-named it to Camp Deerwoode. At this time camp property was comprised of 250 acres featuring horseback riding, including all day and overnight horseback trips. The girls played polo, learned archery and riflery, and had classes in swimming and canoeing, as well as tennis and golf. Other elective courses offered at camp were dancing, dramatics, musical comedy, and musical instruments and nightly shows were performed in The Big Room. The craft building was a popular place and described as the heart of the camp, featuring eight large floor looms with flying shuttles. Other craft projects consisted of silver craft, pottery and leather craft. The camp season ran from July 1 – August 26 and cost $300.
