This was a relaxing and cozy place to stay for a few nights in Brevard. It is super close to downtown restaurants, but private with gorgeous views. We loved exploring the walking paths on the property and listening to the frogs at night.

The pictures don’t do this unique and stunning place justice! It was sooo peaceful, relaxing, gorgeous, and everything I needed was at my fingertips. It’s a place you legit only see in the movies with acres and acres of land, cabins surrounded by mountains, a flowing river for tubing, or fishing, and beautiful ponds nearby with available kayaks with vests for anyone’s use! I could go on and on about how exquisite this place was, but truly it’s a must see for yourself. That and Ms Dionne was suchhh a sweetheart, always ready to help with anything I needed. I’ll definitely be back in the future ??

Bear Cabin at Deerwood provided the remote feeling of being in the woods, yet it was just minutes from town. The trails were beautifully manicured and marked with scenic surroundings. The cabin was precious and we enjoyed the artwork created by previous owners. Dionne was kind, proactive, and prompt. We would definitely stay there again!

Perfect Spot for a Getaway

Perfect spot for a getaway. The location was peaceful and beautiful, with breathtaking views of mountains, French Broad river, ponds and forests. Lots of opportunities for hiking, fishing, kayaking, bird watching, wildlife encounters, bonfire or just sitting and rocking on the porch. Downtown Brevard was just a short drive away as was Ingles. The Bear Cabin was a Studio set-up and the perfect size for the two of us plus our lab mix. The cabin decor was warm and inviting. The history behind the wildlife reserve is also fascinating and is written in their guest book. Had we known it was going to be this wonderful we would've booked a longer stay. Definitely a do-over.

Plan to Book Again for Future Trips!

What a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the peace of nature. The cabin is very comfortable and well laid out. The view from the porch is great...we saw lots of wildlife. It's a short 5 minute ride into town for coffee, food, breweries, shopping but at the cabin it feels like they're worlds away! It's not the place if you want huge and fancy but it's VERY romantic and cozy and just perfect for a couples get away! We really enjoyed our stay at Bear Cabin and plan to book it again for future trips. We loved that they had a Christmas tree in there (our visit was around Christmas) it was such a nice and warm touch!

THE MAYES (Cont.)

In 1969, the Mayes moved into the Otter Cabin, originally built in 1940. It was formerly the camp infirmary and was also known as the Gate House. Bill built the deck and closed in the screen porch where the large brick cooking fireplace is located. During the time they lived there, they tore down the old original homesite that had fallen into such disrepair and decided to build a new log home on the same basement foundation, now called the Big Log Cabin.

ROBERT J. HUSSEY / CAMP DEERWOODE FOR GIRLS:

When Mr. Hussey purchased the property in 1935, the camp was transformed from a boys camp into a camp for girls. It was operated by Mr. and Mrs. George Mason Swift. Mrs. Swift had previously operated a camp, called Camp Dellwood, and in an effort to continue to use the same camp songs, they re-named it to Camp Deerwoode. At this time camp property was comprised of 250 acres featuring horseback riding, including all day and overnight horseback trips. The girls played polo, learned archery and riflery, and had classes in swimming and canoeing, as well as tennis and golf. Other elective courses offered at camp were dancing, dramatics, musical comedy, and musical instruments and nightly shows were performed in The Big Room. The craft building was a popular place and described as the heart of the camp, featuring eight large floor looms with flying shuttles. Other craft projects consisted of silver craft, pottery and leather craft. The camp season ran from July 1 – August 26 and cost $300.

JUDGE JAMES A. FORSYTHE JR FAMILY:

Judge Forsythe was born 11/26/1853. He was married to Julia Nathalie, who was born 5/14/1860, and they married 5/14/1877. They moved into the house and added a wing to it. They had one son and two daughters. James A. Forsythe Jr. (1882 – 1957), Margaret Elizabeth ( 4/21/1885 – 9/16/1886) and Ellen Harllee Forsythe Vermilye (11/4/1888 – 1/24/1936). Julia died 5/14/1923 and Judge Forsythe died in 1925. They are all buried in the Gillispie Cemetery in Brevard. Elizabeth was originally buried on the property but because of the grave being washed by rains, was later transferred to Gillispie Cemetery. There are stories and accounts of baby ghost Elizabeth haunting the Big Log Cabin, which was built on the site of the original homestead.
